Perhaps you suffer from chronic pain and have not received any substantive answers from the medical community. You face every day feeling trapped in this body that suffers in pain but is invisible to the outside world. The pain makes you unable to function, creating a feeling of isolation, loneliness, and hopelessness.

Your body doesn’t feel like it’s a part of you. It isn’t easy to express your emotions and where you feel them in your body. Given your experiences, your body never felt like a safe place, so you learned to disconnect.

Somatic therapy is an approach to trauma and attachment work to heal the past by focusing on and listening to the body and its sensations to, therefore, learn to become reconnected, more aware of what we are feeling and how we feel emotion in the body and help to release the trapped emotions that have been stuck and stored incorrectly.

Trauma and unresolved emotions can be stored on a cellular level whether we are consciously aware of the cause or not. When an animal in the wild is chased, it is in the “Fight-or-Flight” response. When safe, it shakes off the extra energy, can return to baseline, and live in the moment. Humans do not have the same capability; therefore, these emotions become stuck in the body and manifest in many ways.

Focusing on body sensations and movement helps you reconnect with your body so you can begin to feel safe. Most of the time, our bodies are not safe during traumatic experiences, and we learn to dissociate and disconnect.

Somatic therapy can help you learn how emotion feels in your body and give you a sense of control over how to utilize strategies that bring relief from emotional dysregulation and physical pain.
