Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

The soul always knows how to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind.

Life continues to be a struggle, even after many years. Despite how you feel, you’ve managed to get through and exceed your expectations, become successful, and have a close relationship. However, it doesn’t feel like that inside.

For far too long, your life keeps spinning out of control, and you don’t know how to regulate your emotions to regain control. Certain situations or people have begun to trigger you, and you don’t understand why.

You carry this burden like an enormous weight.

Now, you are ready to put down the burden and become free from the pain for the first time in a long time.

Gaining understanding leads to freedom.

Uncovering all those emotions, thoughts, memories, and experiences you’ve worked so hard to bury can feel very intimidating. The fact is they are not buried, and by avoiding them, they will become more powerful and more challenging to manage and function. This is why you are feeling the way you’re feeling.

The good news is that you have lived through the worst! You are resilient and much stronger than you know! Strength lies in surviving, seeking, being open to finding something different, and doing something different while committing to healing the past once and for all.

Your nervous system has been living in the “Fight-or-Flight” mode for too long, and your body remembers. This survival response keeps us safe in extreme life-and-death danger, but the problem is that we are not currently in that danger; past experiences are simply triggering our nervous system.

Through EMDR, we can work together to help release the past from your nervous system, learn how to calm and soothe yourself and change the pathways to make new healthy connections in the brain.

EMDR is an extensively researched form of psychotherapy proven to help individuals recover from trauma or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other distressing life experiences. It differs from “Talk Therapy,” as talk therapy is a left-brained activity, whereas trauma and emotions are stored in the right brain.

This therapeutic approach utilizes bilateral stimulation, which may take many forms, such as literal eye movements, tapping, or bilateral sounds. It allows us to find the core issues by working to where they originated. Once we explore these experiences, we activate neural networks to begin processing. We will continue this process until the target is no longer distressing.

Processing the trauma is for you, and my job is to ensure that you are indeed processing, but I don’t need to know every detail. Individuals often find this treatment less invasive and gentle; it is the fastest way to process the material.

Who can benefit from EMDR?

Over the past few decades, there has been a wealth of research. EMDR is effective in treating many of the following conditions:

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias
  • Chronic Illness and other medical issues
  • Depression and bipolar disorders
  • Dissociative disorders
  • Eating Disorders
  • Grief and loss
  • Pain
  • Performance anxiety
  • Personality disorders
  • PTSD
  • Sexual assault
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Substance abuse and addiction
  • Violence and abuse

Through EMDR, healing is possible.

When we use EMDR, we will develop a target based on your experience that is still impacting you and causing current distress. We will work through that target until it is no longer distressing to you.

For example, someone who has had a car accident and is terrified of getting in a car will now be able to drive themselves wherever they choose. You will find that things or people that trigger you emotionally no longer do.

Once you’ve released the past, you can focus on more positive things. You will begin making healthier decisions and feel more at peace.

You no longer need to carry that burden alone. Let’s work together to lighten the load so you can move on and live the life you were supposed to. Contact me today for more information on how I can help.
